For many Wisconsin farm kids, the FFA State Convention is along-awaited highlight of the year – but for others, the experience is still a bit of a mystery. Whether you’re a current FFA member, alumni, or simply curious about what goes on, let’s take a closer look at what it’s really like to spend a day at the Wisconsin FFA State Convention, held at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.
The Energy of Convention Day
The day we attended, Wednesday, June 11, was buzzing with excitement and full of opportunity. At 9:00am, the doors opened to the Career Fair, and the space quickly filled with a sea of iconic blue corduroy jackets. Students eagerly visited booths to explore career options, talk to industry professionals, and yes – collect a few free stickers and goodies along the way. But the career fair was only the beginning. Throughout the day, students participated in scrapbook and agricultural artwork judging, explored chapter booth displays, interacted with State Star Finalists, and watched delegates in action – all while attending general sessions that brought the entire convention community together.
Scrapbook & Agricultural Artwork Judging:
Each morning of the convention is packed with activities, and two events are scrapbook judging and agricultural artwork judging.
Scrapbook judging can be submitted in either digital or traditional format and serves a dual purpose: documenting the chapter’s history and promoting FFA to potential members. It gives students a chance to get creative while highlighting their chapter’s achievements, community service, and events from the past year.
Meanwhile, the agricultural artwork contest allows students to showcase their artistic talents. Judging is based on elements such as detail, color, composition, perspective, and texture. After submitting their work, students meet face-to-face with one or two judges to discuss the inspiration behind their piece and their creative process – adding a professional presentation aspect to the competition.
State Star Finalist Program:
One of the most prestigious recognitions in the FFA is the State Star Finalist Program. This award honors students with outstanding Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects, celebrating their hard work, skill development, and growth in agriculture. Finalists compete in four categories:
- Agribusiness
- Agricultural Placement
- Agriscience
- Farmer
Out of all applicants across the state, 10 finalists are selected from the Agricultural Placement and Farmer categories, and 5 finalists are chosen from Agriscience and Agribusiness. Each finalist goes through an interview process and is encouraged to create a display showcasing the impact of their SAE. These displays are featured at convention, offering a powerful visual representation of each student’s dedication and success. Finalists receive both a trophy and a monetary award in recognition of their achievement.
What are FFA Delegates?
A vital part of convention operations involves FFA delegates. Each chapter is encouraged to select two students who represent leadership, professionalism, and responsibility. These delegates take on several important roles during the convention:
- Interviewing sectional state officer candidates
- Voting for their sectional representative
- Participating in official business discussions and decisions that impact the state FFA organization
While attending convention, I saw several delegates in action – moving from event to event, meeting with candidates, and managing responsibilities. They stayed busy, and while I didn’t get a chance to talk with them directly, their leadership and involvement were clear to see.
General Sessions & A Special Recognition:
While the exhibit areas and contests were bustling with activity, the General sessions brought everyone together. These sessions are where members hear form inspiring speakers, recognize outstanding accomplishments, and celebrate achievements across the state.
There are five general sessions each year that are held throughout the week. Each one plays an important role in the convention experience, but for us, one session stood out. During one of the sessions, our very own employee, Mason Heise, was recognized on stage! It was an incredibly proud moment to see someone from our own workplace being honored for his hard work, dedication, and achievements outside the job. Congratulations, Mason! Your efforts do not go unnoticed, and we’re proud to celebrate your success.
Conclusion:
Spending a day at the Wisconsin FFA State Convention was both exciting and inspiring. From the fast-paced Career Fair to the artistic showcases, from the leadership of delegates to the recognition of State Star finalists, this event brings together the best of Wisconsin Agriculture, education, and community. Whether you’ve been attending for years or are just hearing about it for the first time, one thing’s clear: FFA Convention isn’t just an event – it’s a celebration of growth, grit, and the future of agriculture. We can’t wait to go back next year – and maybe see you in a blue jacket!
